Across the Desert of Ice

Eleven days private tour to Lake Baikal. Following locations included: Irkutsk, Listvyanka, Arshan, Olkhon island, Barguzin river, Ulan-Ude.

Starts from Irkutsk and back to Irkutsk never using the same road. Starts with one day tour to Listvyanka and then a 2-day trip to Arshan. Then the road to the north from Irkutsk to the center of Lake Baikal to Olkhon Island. Spending there two night and go across the lake to Barguzin bay on the eastern shore of Lake Baikal. Explore the area for 2 days and head to Ulan-Ude and then by train back to Irkutsk.

Visit many places, meet many people. Explore the nature of Lake Baikal and get acquainted with people who live on the shores of the sacred Siberian sea.

Itenerary

Day 1 Irkutsk

Guided tour in the city, visiting several different locations with car and having a short walk in each area. The city is beautiful and friendly. Lunch in the restaurant in downtown and going to visit other interesting places away from downtown. Angara ice breaker with the ice town, more big amazing churches and optional dog sledding adventure.

Day 2 Listvyanka

Spend a day in Listvyanka – the most popular destination on Lake Baikal. Everybody loves to go there if there is any chance. Only 1 hour from Irkutsk by car you find yourself in a tiny settlement on the shore the frozen lake.

Day 3 Road to Arshan

AM 10:00 Departure from Irkutsk to get to the south part of Lake Baikal and Arshan settlement 220 km total (136 mi).

Day 4 Tunka Valley and Back to Irkutsk

Explore a tiny Arshan and the nature beauties of Tunkinsky National Park. Discover Buddhist influence and Mongolian goods market.

Mini hike into the forest on the mountain and try water from different springs.

Swim in the natural hot water pool like a local.

Road back to Irkutsk city.

Day 5 Road to Olkhon Island

Driving to Khuzhir settlement located in the middle of Olkhon Island. (Total distance 300 km / 190 mi)

Stops in different locations to enjoy the views and stories. Lunch on the road in a local cafe.

Arrival PM 6:00

Day 6 Cape Khoboy

Off road trip across the island to the most north cape Khoboy. See the widest place in Lake Baikal from a high location, both west and east shores are usually visible at the same time.

Way goes through steppes and forests. As well as sand dunes and rocky cliffs. Some tiny villages on the way.

Picnic lunch out in the nature.

Return back to the settlement before dinner.

Day 7 Ice Road to Barguzin

Take a hovercraft to go across Baikal in it’s widest place and arrive to Ust-Barguzin settlement. Lunch in the middle of the lake. Stops with nice view and beautiful ice.

Stay in the small wooden hotel.

Day 8 Holy Nose Peninsula

Off-road trip to Barguzin National Park. Explore the eastern shore of Lake Baikal and Holy Nose peninsula.

Day 9 Road to Ulan-Ude

Road trip to Ulan-Ude (237 km / 147 mi).

Sightseeing and lunch stops.

Check into the hotel.

Evening walking tour in Ulan-Ude city.

Dinner.

Day 10 Ulan-Ude and Ivolginsk

Learn about the combination of different cultures in Ulan-Ude, which is the capital of Buddhism in Russia. Visit Christian churches and Buddhist temples. See the Siberian mix of traditional and modern architecture.

Walking city tour combined with car ride to Buddhist temple near Ivolginsk settlement.

Last night in Ulan-Ude. Celebration dinner.

Day 11 Train to Irkutsk

Take a 7-hour second class train ride along the shore of Lake Baikal. Enjoy the views and comfort of Russian rail roads.

Meet with guide at the train station and transfer to the hotel.
